Welcome GridIron Live!

Wednesday, October 14th, 2009

Say hello to our sleek-looking football counterpart.

We have a new game in the Challenge Games family, and it’s on Facebook! Our sports game team has been hard at work on GridIron Live, the first 3D football game that plays in a web browser, and it just went live.

Check it out, give us your feedback and - if you enjoy it - share with friends. Thanks!

And We’re Off!

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

I only have one thought after watching the entirety of the Tigers-Twins thriller: I didn’t think it would be humanly possible to miss the deluge of TBS Frank Caliendo ads, but after watching George Lopez describe a baseball bat as “an exclamation point of justice,” I could use some John Madden posturing. What a game.

And within the hour, a tripleheader of epic proportions is to commence. First, we have the Rockies and Phillies from Philadelphia. Cole Hamels is not amused with these back to back 2:30pm start times - they’re unbecoming of World Champions - and Colorado is bummed that Jorge De La Rosa will be out for this series. Can’t you just feel the excitement?! I know Phillies fans are concerned about Brad Lidge, but I don’t even think this series is going to be decided by him at all. Those expecting a repeat of 2007 will be scoffed at; Phillies in 4.

Next up: Twins at Yankees. As a Yankee fan, let me admit that I fear this matchup. Without Morneau, the Twins have the 2007 New York Giants sans Tiki Barber “NOBODY BELIEVES IN US!” syndrome and are riding a red-hot wave of momentum. (Although, can you really obtain mojo by kicking a city while its down? I sympathize, Detroit.) The Yankees haven’t advanced past the first round since 2004, and everybody is simply penciling them in for an ALCS date with the Red Sox. Game 1 reeks of a trap game, and that terrifies me. I will say, however, that advancing past this round - and a team that has the media playing the David meets Goliath card - should propel them to the World Series. Prediction: Yankees in 5. Poetic justic served by roughing up Carl Pavano, and the only thing limping off the mound this time will be his pride.

Finally, a close runner-up for my favorite matchup of the Divisional Series: Cardinals at Dodgers. St. Louis’ staff is top-heavy with two Cy Young candidates in Wainwright and Carpenter, while the Dodgers bullpen is backlogged with talent. Each team is loaded with a slugger or two (Pujols, Ramirez) but that 1-2 pitching punch is going to be too-much for the Dodgers, whom the Rockies nearly exposed by catching them for the NL West crown in the last weekend of the season. Cardinals in 4.

Personally, I cannot wait to watch the Red Sox and Angels tomorrow night simply because of the following first-round MLB-meets-SAT logic, which goes as follows:

BOS : LAA :: LAA : NYY

Some think the Red Sox will be able to handle the Angels once again. Others have the Angels finally breaking through. And a small portion of the population thinks Frank TV was a success and Lopez Tonight is going to be groundbreaking television. As for me? I think we’re quickly headed for another Yanks-Sox ALCS. Only sweep of the first round: Sox in 3.

Feel free to follow us on Twitter, where sporadic liveblogging of these contests will be simultaneously accompanied by snarky commentary. Happy postseason!

Another [Regular] Season in the Books

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

Well, almost.

This Sunday concludes the regular season of MLB play. That means it’s time for playoff previews, award postulation, and World Series predictions. Since the AL’s best pitcher has already been a topic for debate, let’s move to the NL.

The race for the Cy Young is seemingly between opinion-leader Adam Wainwright, critical darling Tim Lincecum, and dark horse candidate Chris Carpenter. Many polling will point to Lincecum’s lower win total and the time he missed with injury as reasons for exclusion, but that’s somewhat unfair: he’s started only one game less than Wainwright [32/33] and has pitched only 2 fewer innings [225.1/227] while sporting a lower ERA [2.48/2.58] and a higher strikeout total [261/204.]

Also “hurting” Wainwright is the argument that he’s not the ace of the Cardinal staff: that title might belong to Chris Carpenter, who has the NL’s lowest ERA at 2.24. And despite starting less games (28) and throwing less innings (192.2) due to injury, he’s thrown more complete games (3 vs. 1) and shutouts (1 vs. 0) than his birdmate.

Yet wins do factor, and injury time does linger in the minds of voters. If he pitches another victory tonight for the Cards, Wainwright will be the league’s only 20 game winner with very impressive statistics, which is why it’s safe to say that all signs point to him capturing the Cy with a win tonight.

Your thoughts?

“BRAD LIDGE, YOU’RE KILLING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Friday, September 25th, 2009

That’s the actual title (verbatim) of this YouTube video of a Phillies fan doing commentary during Brad Lidge’s latest (11th, league-leading) blown save in a 7-6 loss to the Marlins on Wednesday night.

And in case you were wondering, the omniscient subtitle of this live-journalism piece is: “I SAW THIS COMING A MILE AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!”

The accents are nowhere close to being remotely similar, but somehow Mr. Exclamation Point reminds me of this guy, especially in terms of their proper diction and concise analysis.

I’d never thought I’d be saying this, but between Superdad and Anti-Lidge, I’m loving Philly fans right now.
