This Week in Baseball History: 09/14/08

In 1907, Nick Maddox threw a no hitter against the Dodgers as a 20 year old Pittsburgh Pirate. Other youngsters to spin a no-no are Vida Blue (21), Amos Rusie (20). John Lush (20) and Christy Mathewson (20).

In 2007,  Jim Thome hit his 500th career home run in dramatic walk off fashion.  Thome was the 23rd player to reach that milestone.  Thome seems to be one power hitter who can still rake later in his career…and I swear I’ve seen this guy hit some bombs in the mid-1990s that are still going.

Also on this date in 2007, David Wright became the 30th player to go 30-30.  Anybody notice that 3B has gone from a position that only seemed to have 1-2 studs to a golden age for the hot corner?

Thanks to the fantastic site National Pastime for the historical help.
